Message from the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts

We fully support the vision of the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS. We have almost ten million members in 144 countries many of whom are working towards a world where women, whatever their situation or HIV status, have full rights and are respected and involved members of their societies.

MESSAGE OF SUPPORT FOR ICW
by Lesley Bulman
Chief Executive, World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts is an organization dedicated to girls and young women everywhere. We aim to support girls and women under all circumstances, and that includes those who are living with HIV or who have AIDS. Many of our members in areas that are afflicted have family members and friends who are living with HIV/AIDS and we have members within our family of Member Organizations who are themselves HIV positive. They are welcome and respected members of our global Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting family.

As part of our work with our members and their communities, we focus on the prevention of HIV/AIDS and the support of those who are afflicted or affected. Across the world, many girls follow an HIV/AIDS programme that deals specifically with Prevention, Human Rights, Care and Support. When it is successfully completed, girls get a badge to wear on their uniform. In Africa, we work with other youth organizations along the same lines, to reach out to more and more young people, spreading the message of support and care for those with HIV/AIDS. In India, we also run a similar programme reaching out to tens of thousands of girls.

We do not fear to speak out. We are proud of our work on HIV/AIDS and have won awards for our activities. The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts also takes on a sensitive issue as part of its advocacy to make the world a better place for girls and women, at the moment it is the prevention of adolescent pregnancies, a very sensitive issue in some countries and cultures.

We fully support the vision of the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS. We have almost ten million members in 144 countries many of whom are working towards a world where women, whatever their situation or HIV status, have full rights and are respected and involved members of their societies. Our current theme is Our Rights, Our Responsibilities, this includes six elements:
  • the right to be Me
  • the right to be Heard
  • the right to be Happy
  • the right to Work Together
  • the right to Learn and
  • the right to Live in Peace.
We believe that ALL people, women and girls in particular and especially those who are living with HIV/AIDS, have these rights.

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts would like to be part of the ICW global network that offers friendship and support to HIV positive women everywhere.
